Violence against Men- A Myth or Reality?

In a male dominated country where women have to face the worse, violence against men seems frivolous. I came across this site www.aimwa.in which works towards welfare of men in india. A survey conducted as back as 2005 which was featured in the website revealed some shocking data.

Have a look what the data reveals:

“Out of 100,000 men surveyed during that one year, 2005- 2006, 98% of men faced domestic violence at the hands of their wives and in-laws in the form verbal, physical, emotional, mental and financial abuse.

The organizations that conducted the survey were also confronted with the gruesome reality that most abused men suffer in silence for fear of being discredited or ridiculed by the society. This resulted in a lot of psychological, sometimes irreparable, trauma to the abused male.

Further investigation into the problem revealed that many such men who are unable to withstand domestic abuse, withdraw from the society, fell prey to addictions or in extreme cases end their own lives.”

Suicide Data of men:

The total number of suicides by married men compared to married women:

Year Married Men Married Women
2005 52,583 28,188
2006 55,452 29,869
2007 57,593 30,064

This reminds me of the movie, Aitraaz, an Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra starrer. Wherein Priyanka Chopra harasses Akshay Kumar, by taking undue advantage of the fact that she’s a woman. Going by the data provided above, cases of violence against men seem to be rampant. My question is why is a man’s credibility always doubted?

Is it a global fact or a metropolitan phenomenon in India?
